Katerina and Julie present at RNA Society Meeting 2019 in Krakow
White Rose RNA Salon 2019RNA Salon part 1 (Jan 9th 2019 in Sheffield)
Great first White Rose RNA Salon event in Sheffield. Fab talks and posters. Lots of opportunity to meet the rest of the Yorkshire RNA community and chat about RNA. Katerina presented our work on potential translation of neuronal lncRNAs during differentiation. Nice job Katerina! |
White Rose RNA Salon in Leeds April 2019Alfredo Castello was our keynote speaker. He also kindly led a session in our techniques workshop in the afternoon, which included Nanopore Sequencing and FISH. Thanks to all the presenters and organisers.

Great LeedsOmics Symposium 2018
We welcomed Prof. Christ Ponting and Dr Mary O'Connell to give our keynote talks at this years symposium. Chris spoke about "Extraordinary RNAs in health and disease" and Mary on the "Malleability of protein-coding sequences". 11 people (PhD students, postdocs and PIs) gave short talks on hugely diverse topics all the way from honeybee eusociality to tumour genomics. There was also a lively poster session. Thanks to everyone who attended-a great day of omics.

Welcome to the Aspden Group-Oct 2017 |
As we start the new academic year we welcome some new faces to the group; Isabel Birds for her masters project, Charles Wade and Albert Blandy for their undergrad research projects. Also Ioannis starts his PhD project!

Meeting Minds in Oxford:
University of Oxford Alumni Weekend 15-17 Sep 2017
Julie gave the Department of Biochemistry Lecture at the Alumni Weekend this year. She presented our current thinking on long non-coding RNAs and their role in disease and development. She compared them between Drosophila and humans, to emphasis the use of both systems. Julie also presented some preliminary results from our work on long-non coding RNAs in the cytoplasm.
"It was fantastic to be invited back to Oxford to give this annual lecture at the Alumni weekend. The room was packed with alumni and friends from across a range of subjects, and I got some great questions after my talk. It is the first time I have been back to the Department since the construction of the new building so it was wonderful see how the Department has changed since 1998-2002, which was when I was an undergrad there." www.alumni.ox.ac.uk/sites/www.alumni.ox.ac.uk/files/alumni%20weekend%202017_web.pdf |
First LeedsOmics Research Day May 2017
LeedsOmics held its first annual research day in May 2017. Our Keynote Speaker was Dr Angela Brooks, University California, Santa Cruz. Over the day we enjoyed a diverse range of talks and posters from across the omics community in FBS and FMH at Leeds. Thanks to all those attended.
Here are our prize winners for best talk (Ray Moran), and best posters (Michaela Agapiou and Laura Cortazar).

First Leeds Fly Away Day- Friday 27th Jan 2017
The Leeds Drosophila community enjoyed a great day of fly related science with our first day retreat. Members of Aspden, Bretman, Isaac, Duncan and Peel groups gathered for a day of discussions, introducing our research to each other. We also welcomed Dr Thomas Price from the University of Liverpool as our guest speaker. And of course we rounded off the day with beer and food out in Leeds.

Ribosome profiling workshop 27th Oct 2016
Group trip down to Charles Darwin House in London to attend the Biochemical Society Ribosome Profiling Workshop.
Julie presented the introduction to ribosome profiling session to kick the day off. Can't wait to get started on some Poly-Ribo-Seq experiments now. Great to catch up with old translation friends and some new collaborators. |
Welcome to Katerina and Michaela! |
Good-bye Jessica! |
Sept 2016- We are super excited to welcome two new PhD students to the group, Katerina Douka and Michaela Agapiou.

Translation UK 2016
Julie and Eleanor attended Translation UK at the University of Surrey-both presenting posters.
LeedsOmics launch great success!
Researchers from across Leeds University joined us at the LeedsOmics launch in LIDA, including from St James' Hospital, School of Mathematics, School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Biological Sciences and Faculty of Medicine and Health. We shared coffee and croissants as we chatted about omics and networked. Julie, Niamh and Mary gave an overview of the LeedsOmics vision and both John Ladbury (Dean of FBS) and Paul Stewart (Dean of FMH) welcomed people and described the importance of developing the OMICS community here at Leeds.
